Samsung to hire US talents with Masters and Doctoral degrees.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Samsung to hire US talents with Masters and Doctoral degrees.

Samsung Electronics wants to increase its global talent pool by hiring graduates with master’s or doctoral degrees from prestigious U.S. universities.

The world’s largest electronics maker said Wednesday that it is looking to hire those with doctorate degrees in science and engineering or those who expect to be awarded them by the end of the year.

It will also look to those with MBAs and pick interns from those still in college. Doctorate candidates must have a degree in electoral engineering, computer engineering, computer science, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, medical engineering and material engineering.

MBA applicants must have two years work experience in companies and have a degree in marketing, management development, product strategy and business strategy.

The company will take applicants until October 16. It didn’t disclose how many they would pick.

Samsung started employing those with postgraduate degrees from the United States in 2000. The firm earns over 80 percent of its revenue abroad, with North America being one of the most important portions, said a Samsung spokesman. The company plans to continuously gather talented individuals who demonstrate an understanding of local sentiment to further boost its business there.

The United States is home to many of Samsung’s competitors and clients in the information technology industry. The Suwon-based firm has been increasing its market share in America in various areas, especially smartphones. It also has a chip factory in Texas.

Those selected will start their internship next summer and start working full time in 2014 at the company’s office in Korea.

Other Samsung Group affiliates such as Samsung Display and Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology are also looking for people with postgraduate degrees. The display maker will take applications from holders of eight different masters or doctorate degrees in science and engineering until Monday. The group’s research leg will hire until October 15 from six different study areas with the same academic standards.

Samsung to spread Music Hub pre-installed in a bunch of other Samsung devices.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Samsung to spread Music Hub pre-installed in a bunch of other Samsung devices.

"One of the great advantages we have over our rivals is that Music Hub is pre-installed in our flagship product and will be available later in a bunch of other Samsung devices," said Kang, who developed the Hangul 2000 software, a Korean equivalent of Microsoft's Word processor, and was poached from mobile operator KT Corp in 2010.

Music Hub, available on Samsung's Galaxy S III smartphones in the United States and several European markets, combines all the key available music service options on a single platform - offering paid digital downloads like iTunes, a personalized radio service like Pandora, music upload to cloud like iTunes Match and Cloud Player. Users can access a catalogue of over 19 million songs - including the Korean hit 'Gangnam Style' that has taken the pop world by storm and topped iTune's download charts - and stream seamlessly to mobile devices. Apple says its iTunes Store has more than 28 million songs.

"Amazon, Google and Apple should really take note of Music Hub's radio service," Billboard said recently. "Whether or not the service is good, great or equal to something like Pandora really isn't the point. What's important is that Samsung has put the most mainstream of music products (radio) with less mainstream music products (downloads, cloud storage)," it said.

The toughest challenge is to turn around consumer perception that Samsung is only good at hardware, and to add killer apps to bind consumers to their Samsung devices.

"Pre-installing Music Hub on the Galaxy is powerful, but not enough," said Kang, adding there be more aggressive promotions, including month-long free trials and give-away albums.

That will put the squeeze more firmly on Pandora, Spotify and other online music firms that lose money as they depend on paid subscriptions and advertising but have no hardware to sell.

"We have an internal target to break even in software. But, in general, selling content won't make much of a contribution to the bottom line. We see other new business opportunities associated with content," Kang said.

Samsung plans to have Music Hub working on a range of consumer devices - from smartphones to Internet-enabled TVs and fridges - and is likely to ultimately want to monetize it by hooking up with an ad platform.

"We're preparing new services for launch early next year. With these offerings, people will start to think Samsung is good in software, too," said Kang, declining to elaborate on those launches.

All smartphones brands with NFC differentiate their products, where iPhone 5 lacks.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

All smartphones brands with NFC differentiate their products, where iPhone 5 lacks.

Although Apple's iPhone 5 is expected to enjoy strong sales, the lack of NFC (near field communication) functionality in the latest iPhone model will allow rival brands to differentiate their products and to become priority partners for launching NFC-enabled applications and services in cooperation with financial and telecom service companies, according to industry sources.
Most industry watchers believe that the reason Apple rolled out the iPhone 5 without built-in NFC functionality is that Apple aims to promote its in-house developed Passbook technology, which has already integrated a number of functionalities, including the processing of boarding passes, membership cards, tickets, value-stored cards, and various kinds of coupons, but not yet credit and debit cards.
Since a number of smartphone platforms, including Android, BlackBerry, Symbian and Bada as well as the forthcoming Windows Phone 8, all support NFC technology, financial firms, telecom carriers and advertisement agencies, among others, are likely to tie up with non-iPhone vendors to launch NFC-enabled services, said the sources.
Samsung Electronics has won the largest number of NFC-related cooperation projects in Europe and Asia, while RIM, HTC, LG Electronics and Nokia have also engaged in a number of cases, revealed the sources, noting that RIM has led rivals in establishing ties with the business sector for NFC applications.
HTC has recently launched three NFC-enabled models, the HTC Desire C, One XC and One X (16G-version), in cooperation with China Merchants Bank, supporting electronic wallet functionality launched by China UnionPay as well as payment systems of China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom, the sources commented.

Samsung and others OEM`s to boost Europe sales, thanks to iPhone 5 LTE limitations.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Samsung and others OEM`s to boost sales in Europe, thanks to the  iPhone 5 LTE limitations.

The European GSM model of the iPhone 5 supports LTE in the 850 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2.1 GHz bands. Those bands can be used by relatively few operators in Europe, including EE in the UK and Deutsche Telekom in Germany. Vodafone and Telefónica will be restricted to offering the latest Apple smartphone with access to their slower 3G services.

This iPhone 5's European LTE limitations will "push Vodafone and many other European operators harder into the arms of Samsung," especially as the South Korean company's popular Galaxy S line of phones includes an LTE version that is compatible with their networks, Robin Bienenstock, a London-based analyst for Sanford C. Bernstein, told Bloomberg.

The LTE limitations could also boost the sales of Nokia and HTC, which have each recently unveiled new high-end and mid-range smartphones running Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 software.

In an attempt to sidestep the issue, Telefónica's O2 UK said it plans to offer iPhone customers with a long-term contract the chance to upgrade to an LTE handset once the operator's own LTE service is launched. A company spokesman told Bloomberg that the operator will offer 10 per cent towards buying out the old contract and will pay the taxes.

Vodafone and Telefónica already offer LTE smartphones from Samsung, LG and HTC that can access their LTE networks using frequencies other than the 1800 MHz band.

However, Bienenstock told Bloomberg: "The question for operators now becomes in the near term--how sticky is Apple's software versus the better speeds of the Samsung Galaxy's, and how much subsidy will be put behind this?"

So, some of Europe's leading operators will likely offer cheaper and more varied alternatives to Apple's new iPhone 5 due to its limited support for European LTE frequencies.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced memory technology,  announced that it has begun volume production of 128-gigabyte (GB) embedded memory for next-generation smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices.

Samsung started producing the new128GB eMMC (embedded multimedia card) Pro Class 1500 in late August, which is only one month after it started delivering eMMC Pro products in 16-, 32- and 64-GB densities, rapidly completing the industry's widest line-up of eMMC products.

"By doubling the highest density of its previous eMMC products, Samsung expects to contribute significantly to a timely release of leading-edge mobile devices," said Wanhoon Hong, executive vice president, Memory Sales & Marketing, Samsung Electronics. "The higher data storage and faster data transmission, will bring a range of benefits to users that compare to those of ultra-slim notebook PCs."

With 128GB of the new embedded memory storage, mobile handsets and tablet PCs can store up to 15 full HD, 8GB-equivalent video files. Also, the new eMMC fits into an extremely slim 12x16mm FBGA package that nicely accommodates today's sleeker mobile designs. In addition, the new eMMC provides the industry's highest density and highest performance level for an embedded memory chip.

Samsung's eMMC Pro cards read data sequentially at up to 140 megabytes per second (MB/s) and write it at up to 50MB/s, which is five times faster than Class-10 rated external memory cards. For random reading and writing, it can process up to 3500/1500 IOPS (inputs and outputs per second, respectively)*.

The ultra high-speed storage device uses Samsung's 64-gigabit (Gb) NAND memory with a toggle DDR 2.0 interface based on the company's latest 20 nanometer class** process technology. The new eMMC's fully managed NAND comes with its own high performance controller and intelligent flash-management firmware.

The Samsung eMMC Pro Class 1500 supports the JEDEC eMMC v4.5 specification that standardizes the most advanced features to improve performance, efficiency, security and reliability. In being quick to mass produce the industry's most extensive eMMC v4.5 product line-up, Samsung anticipates that the proportion of premium NAND flash in the mobile market will grow even faster.

Apple goes after Google`s Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Apple goes after Google`s Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Apple said it plans to extend its claims of infringement to include Samsung products released since the last case management conference in May. Having evaluated the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet and the OS used in it, Android 4.1, Apple said it believes both infringe on the patents at issue, and intends to amend its suit accordingly.

Samsung Electronics intends to drag the iPhone 5 into an ongoing patent lawsuit with Apple, according to documents filed with a U.S. court.

The companies revealed their plans in a joint case management conference statement filed with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, San Jose Division, on Wednesday.

How Google is going to react to Apple`s claim against Samsung use of the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS, remains to be seen.
