Components Of Active Directory

In this tutorial we will  be able to understand Active Directory Components. As we already discussed about Active Directory that, Active Directory is the collection of Users ,Groups, Services and resources and they are also called Active Directory Objects. In other words the Active Directory is centralized database of these objects.

The server where we install our Active Directory is known as Active Directory Domain Controller and in Server 2008 we can say it Active Directory Domain Services. In Windows Server 2008, one or more than one server are available where Active Directory Domain Services can be Install.



So, for better Administration and security we can categorize these Active Directory Objects in two categories such as:

1. Container Objects          2. Leaf Objects   

First we will discuss the Container Objects.

Container Objects:
                            are those Active Directory Objects which can contain other objects in them. Such as:

• Domain

• Forest

• Tree

• OU (Organizational Unit )

Leaf Objects:
                             which cannot contain other objects in them. Such as:

• Users

• Computers

• Printers,etc.

Now, here we discus just Container Object in detail.

Domain:
            Active Directory Domain is the Logical group of computers which shares a central directory database where only Microsoft Windows Operating Systems are running such as (Windows 7 , Vista and other Microsoft Operating Systems). For more clarity see the figure below:

We put the combination of computers and logical groups in a triangle. So Windows Server Domain is the collection of computers where different versions of Microsoft Operating System can use Active Directory.

Tree:

Active Directory Tree is also a collection of Active Directory objects. It is the Logical Group of network resources and devices. Actually Active Directory Tree is the collection of one or more than one domains and there should be relationship between them known as Parent Child relationship (just like Tree has Branch and Branch has Sub branches). Active Directory Tree must have the Same Namespace which explain in the figure below

First domain is known as Forest Root because all the child domain start from first domain.

So, as you can see the Domain in the above figure has same name space like, Forest Root starts from (Microsoft.com) and the Child Domains are ( exchange.Microsoft.com, nwtrader.Microsoft.com and  jp.nwtrader.microsoft.com ) has the same Name Spaces  ( .Microsoft.com ). It is mandatory to put the Forest Root domain name in the child domain.

Forest:

In the real world, a Forest contains a lot of trees so same as in the Active Directory has a lot of Active Directory Trees.

Active Directory Forest is the largest container object within Active Directory. It is the fundamental security boundary within Active Directory. It means a user can access resources across an entire Active Directory forest using a single log on/password combination. An additional log on would be required to access resources across more than one Forest.

See the below figure to understand a Forest.

Regarding the above figure a user can access to the network where ever he want and he can use just single log on/password combination beside different log on/password combination.

So Active Directory Forest is the collection of one or more Trees, a largest container object and seems as a security boundary with in Active Directory.

OU (Organizational Unit ):

An OU is a container that represents a logical grouping of resources that have similar security or administrative guidelines.

You can put a small container object in a single domain which is known as Organizational Unit.

Organizational Unit (OU) has two benefits:

1.Delegation

If you want to Delegate Authority to someone else and want to give small level administrative control then you use Organizational Unit (OU) .



2. Applying Security Policy:

If you want to apply Group Policy object (GPO) then OU is the only container object where you can apply GPO.

How To Install Active Directory on Windows Server 2008

 In my previous post I described some New features of windows server 2008 active directory. Active Directory is the database of your User Groups, Servicesand Resources. It means Active Directory is the Centralize collection of User Groups, Services and Resources and they are known as Objects in Active Directory.

Active Directory provides the structure to centralize the network and store information about network resources across the entire domain. Active Directory uses Domain Controllers to keep this centralized 

storage available to network users.

So, today I will teach you how to install Active Directory in Windows Server 2008.

STEP 1

First of all click Start Menuicon and write dcpromo command in run box and press Enter key. Then Check your Active Directory Domain Services either it is already installed or not.

STEP 2

After checking Domain Services, the Ad Installation Wizard window will display, just click NEXT  

After this Operating System Compatibility option will open, again click NEXT.

STEP 3

Then after, Deployment Configuration window will open. You will get two options 

 A) Existing Forest      B) New Domain

You  have to select option (B) and click NEXT

  

 STEP 4 

Now Fully Qualified Domain Name window will open. Write your desired domain Name like example.net.comand click NEXT.

STEP 5 

 
Now Forest Fictional Level prompt will open. If you are using Windows Server 2000 then select Server 2003 Forest and if you are using Windows Server 2003 then upgrade to Server 2008 Forest Functional Level. 

STEP 6

It is mandatory to install DNS in Additional Domain Controller option. Beside this it is also mandatory to check and role the Global Catalog option because it is very compulsory to check DNS, rodc and Global Catalog options in Active Directory. After this, a massage will show just click NEXt.

STEP 7

In Database location windows, files and path option will appear in which log and sysvol files are available. Just click NEXT.

After this, password prompt will open. It is mandatory to write and confirm your password. 

NOTE:  There is complexity policy for password. So you should use special characters and alphabets and click Next .

STEP 8

Now a summery will open, you have to save export settings and made a Script which you can use everywhere and you will be able to restart your Active Directory.

Now install Group Policies, Configurationand other consoles. Tick mark the restartoption then your server will reboot. After reboot you can work on your installed Active Directory.

 

 Click Finish to Complete the Active Directory Installation Wizard and restart your machine.

That’s all information you need to install your Active Directory in Windows Server 2008.

We are going to discuss about the new features in Active Directory Of Windows Server 2008,Or improvements in active directory in Windows Server 2008.

 There are lots of new features introduced in Windows Server 2008 Active Directory, but we are going to discuss the just important ones.

   



(RDOC) Read only Domain Controller

Read only domain controller (RDOC) just supports inbound replication, but not support outbound replication. It means (RDOC) accepts the changes in other Domain Controller but you cannot create a new object in it and cannot make changes or modify the older one.

Read only domain controller (RDOC) gives extra security to your networks. For example if your office or database is far cry from you and you cannot provide security to your office physically  and your mind feel insecurity that anyone can access your database then you can secure your database through Read only domain controller (RDOC).

 

Server Core

 

Server core is a light weight version which newly introduced in Windows Server 2008. Server core can operate and manage through commands. Actually Server Core is a command prompt, and you can manage your server and domain through Server Core.

Fine-Grained Password Policies

In Microsoft Windows Server 2000 and 2003, Active Directory domainswere limited to one and only one password policy and this was a bad idea. But Microsoft learned from their previous versions of Windows Server software and introduced fine-grained password policies in Windows Server 2008. In fine-grained password policies the administrators can deploy more than one password policy within a single domain.

Moreover, through Fine-Grained Password Policies You can deploy Specific type policy on users and groups and make their password less Strict and More Strict.

 

 

Auditing of Active Directory modification and deletions

There is an improvement in Auditing of Active Directory in Windows Server 2008.

The administrator can do auditing of modification and deletions in Active Directory and also know about where modification and deletions are carrying out in a object.

 

    Ability to Start and Stop Active Directory as Service

It uses to stop or restart Active Directory® Domain Services (ADDS) in the Windows Server® 2008 operating system.  The administrators now have the ability to stop the Active Directory services for various reasons. By the help of this the you can do many maintenance tasks such as moving Database file from one hard disk to another or to do other tasks of off line maintenance by stopping your services in off line mode and do the task and restart your Active Directory.

Connect two computers using Crossover Cable

Want to Connect Two Home Computers for File Sharing?? Just Follow these steps  if you want to share a large number of files between two computers, or transfer information from an existing machine to a replacement one, you can easily establish a direct connection between two PCs by using a crossover cable.

First of all you need to some change in the network configuration on both the computers which describe below.


 For Window 7 Click on the Start Menu icon  >>Then Right Click on the Computer >> Select Properties >> Then Choose Advance System settenigs >> Click on the Computer Name Option.

NOTE: Both Machines Should Have Same Computer Name and Work Group

But, if you want to change the Computer name Manually then then click on the Change option and write the desired Computer Name and Work Group  same for both Machines.
After changing  Computer Name and Work Group on both machines, you need to restart your both machines.

After This..

Click Start Manu icon >> Select Control Panel >> Choose Network And Internet Then select Network And Sharing Center >> In the Left Column  select Change The Adapter Setting.

Then Right Click On the Local Area Network >> Choose Properties. Shown in Figure below

           

Choose and Double Click on Internet Protocol Version 4(Tcp/Ip4)

Configure The IP Addresses.

If you are using a crossover cable to connect two computers, you will need to configure static IP addresses for each computer.

You have to make sure that both computers have IP addresses that are on the same sub-net. For example, if you give one computer an IP address of 192.168.0.1, then you should give the second computer an IP of 192.168.0.2

If you used the above IP addresses, you should use a sub-net mask of 255.255.255.0. If you use an incorrect sub-net mask, the connection will not work.

Remember the value for the default gateway should be the same on both machines. You can pick which IP address you want to use, but use it on both computers for the default gateway.Shown in the Figure below.

Using Local User Accounts

If you’re facing  problems accessing files both ways, you may have to create a user account on each computer that has the same name and same password. This helps get past any kind of Access is Denied errors that may pop up.

Disable Your Firewalls.

You should disable the firewall on both computers to ensure that none of the file sharing ports are being blocked..You can do this by going to Control Panel and then Windows Firewall. Click on Off .
