Now that the dust is settling, it's time to start the comparisons! We're pretty big Android fans around here, and we've got to talk about how the iPhone 5 matches up to Samsung's Galaxy S3 (Galaxy S III) -- both on paper and the whole "ecosystem" thing. We're not going to try to sway anyone either direction (we think having a choice is great), we just want to lay out all the data we have so far.
Before we get any further, this article will look at the specifications of the Galaxy S3 compared to that of the iPhone 5 so you can see what the differences are. We won't be deciding on a winner.
Apple has increased the screen size and also the resolution to 640 x 1136, retaining the Retina quality pixel density of 326ppi. Samsung's Galaxy S3 has a slightly lower but respectable pixel density of 306ppi from its 720 x 1280 resolution.
The Galaxy S3 has a rear facing camera rated at 8Mp with the ability to record video in full HD 1080p quality which Apple matches with the iPhone 5's rear iSight camera, although each has different software features.
Both front cameras on the smartphones can record HD video at 30fps but the Galaxy S3's has a slightly higher rating at 1.9Mp compared to 1.2Mp.
Samsung will be updating the S3 to the latest version of Android, 4.1 Jelly Bean while Apple's iPhone 5 comes pre-loaded with iOS 6.

1. Release Date and Sale
iPhone 5 - Available now, 12 September unveiling, 21 September available date
Samsung Galaxy S3 - Available now, unveiled May 2012
The iPhone 5 is out there. Early supply issues meant that demand outstripped supply, but looking at the numbers it's no surprise. The iPhone 5 sold five million units in its first weekend on sale, and two million in its first 24 hours.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 has already been released, of course, and has done extremely well in its short time on this Earth. Back in July we heard that the phone had already broken through the 10 million sales barrier, making it a faster seller than either of its predecessors, the original Galaxy S and the hugely popular Galaxy S2.

By the end of 2012, analyst predictions suggest the iPhone 5 will sell around 26 million units. Samsung's own JK Shin has said he expects the Samsung Galaxy S3 to sell 30 million by the end of the year. Let's not forget that the Samsung Galaxy S3 has been on sale for a lot longer, though.
2. Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3: Dimensions
Samsung Galaxy S3 :
The Galaxy S3 measures in at 71 x 137 x 8.6mm and 133g. The iPhone 4S, is thicker and heavier than the Galaxy S3 but Apple has outdone Samsung with the iPhone 5.
Apple iPhone 5
The iPhone 5 is 59 x 124 x 7.6mm and 112g, according to Apple.
3. Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3: Screen
Samsung Galaxy S3
The Galaxy S3 has a 4.8-inch display and while every single iPhone in the past has had a comparatively tiny 3.5-inch one, the iPhone 5 has a 4in display.
Apple iPhone 5
Apple has increased the screen size and also the resolution to 640 x 1136, retaining the Retina quality pixel density of 326ppi. Samsung's Galaxy S3 has a slightly lower but respectable pixel density of 306ppi from its 720 x 1280 resolution.
4. Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3: Storage and memory
Both handsets feature 1GB of RAM. Both the Galaxy S3 and the iPhone 5 come with a variety of internal storage options, with 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB versions on offer. The Galaxy S3 also supports a microSD slot, allowing further expansion currently of up to 64GB which Apple does not.
5. Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3: Processor
Samsung Galaxy S3
Samsung uses its own Exynos 4 Quad chip for the Galaxy S3 which is unsurprisingly quad-core. It's clocked at 1.4GHz and is based on the ARM Cortex A9 architecture.
Apple iPhone 5
As expected the iPhone 5 has an A6 processor which Apple says is twice as fast as the A5 chip found in the iPhone 4S, including graphics performance. Apple hasn't revealed any technical specifications for the A6 so it's hard to compare with the Galaxy S3's. It is believed that the A6 is dual-core.
5. Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3: Cameras
Both front cameras on the smartphones can record HD video at 30fps but the Galaxy S3's has a slightly higher rating at 1.9Mp compared to 1.2Mp.
6. Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3: Software
Apple’s iPhone runs its own iOS software while Samsung’s Galaxy S3 uses Google’s Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich and a TouchWiz overlay.
Samsung will be updating the S3 to the latest version of Android, 4.1 Jelly Bean while Apple's iPhone 5 comes pre-loaded with iOS 6.
7. Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3: Connectivity
iPhone 5 - new proprietary 8-pin connector, no microSD, microSIM
Samsung Galaxy S3 - microUSB, microSD, microSIM
Perhaps the most earth-shattering change in the iPhone 5 is that it rejects the 30-pin connector used across iPods, iPads and iPhones in favour of a much-smaller 8-pin model. This is comparable in size to the microUSB standard, although it's not exactly the same as microUSB. Apple is never keen on going with the bog-standard option when it can make its own version.

The problem with changing connector is that the new iPhone will be incompatible with current iPhone docking accessories - not good news if you own something like a B&W Zeppelin. However, Apple does offer a connector that acts as a bridge between the old 30-pin socket and the new 8-pin one.
It's all change, but the iPhone 5 doesn't bring expandable memory to the series - no iPhone to date has offered a memory card slot. You're also mostly tied to iTunes when transferring content like music and pictures to the phone.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is pretty much the polar opposite in its approach. It lets you use microSD cards and uses the microUSB standard. Handily, it's MHL compliant, too, able to output HD video with surround sound audio to an HDMI port when used with the right cable. Unlike the iPhone, the Samsung doesn't rely on sync software to transfer files directly either - you can drag and drop files when plugged into a computer over USB.

8. Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3: Battery
iPhone 5 - 1440mAh
Samsung Galaxy S3 - 2100mAh
The iPhone 5 hasn't gotten a huge battery increase over its predecessor. The iPhone 4S has a 1430mAh unit, and the iPhone 5 a 1440mAh unit. It'll last for 40 hours of audio playback, or up to eight hours of talk time, with 3G enabled.
Also, like previous iPhones you can't swap out the battery on the iPhone 5, so if you're caught short without power you're done for... well, your phone is anyway.
Samsung made a particularly strong effort with the latest Galaxy's battery, outstripping most of its rivals by around 20 per cent. For example, the HTC One X uses an 1800mAh unit and the Sony Xperia S a 1750mAh battery.

In spite of the larger screen and only slight capacity increase, the iPhone 5 betters the stamina offered by the iPhone 4S. Apple must have put some real effort into this.

Conclusion
Both of these devices are fantastic. Our bias is with Apple's ecosystem and we think the iPhone 5 gets the quality nod, but if you're looking for either of these devices to be declared the winner, go look somewhere else. They're both powerful, have gorgeous displays, have access to lots of apps, and each has some individual advantages over the other...
...but buying either is much more about which ecosystem you prefer—iOS or Android. The Simple is that for Android lovers Samsung Galaxy S3 is best and for iOS6 lovers Apple iPhone 5 is best.
