Android Design V2: Now with stencils

When we initially released Android Design, by far the number one request we received was for us to release stencils as well. The fine folks on the Android User Experience team are pleased today to release some official Android Design stencils for your mockup-creating pleasure.

With these stencils you can now drag and drop your way to beautifully designed Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) applications, with grace and ease. The stencils feature the rich typography, colors, interactive controls, and icons found throughout Ice Cream Sandwich, along with some phone and tablet outlines to frame your meticulously crafted creations.

Currently we have stencils available for those venerable interactive design powerhouses Adobe® Fireworks®, and Omni® OmniGraffle® and we may expand to other applications® in the future. The source files for the various icons and controls are also available, created in Adobe® Photoshop®, and Adobe® Illustrator®. Here are the downloads.

We’ll be updating these stencils over time so, as always, please send in your feedback!

New App Stats for Publishers on Android Market

If you've published an app on Android Market, you’ve probably used Application Statistics to help tune your development and marketing efforts. Application Statistics is a set of dashboards in the Developer Console that shows your app’s installation performance across key dimensions such as countries, platform versions, device models, and others. Today we are making Application Statistics even more powerful for publishers, adding new metrics, new ways to analyze your data, and a redesigned UI that’s much easier to use.

First, we are adding important new installation metrics to the dashboards. You can now see your installations measured by unique users, as well as by unique devices. For user installations, you can view active installs, total installs, and daily installs and uninstalls. For devices, you can see active installs as well as daily installs, uninstalls, and upgrades.



Along with the new metrics, we’re also introducing two new data dimensions — Carrier and App Version. You can use them to track your app’s installation trends across mobile operators or monitor the launch metrics of specific app updates.



To give you visibility over your installation data over time, we’re adding timeline charts for all metrics and dimensions. At a glance, these charts highlight your app’s installation peaks and longer-term trends, which you can correlate to promotions, app improvements, or other factors. You can even focus in on data inside a dimension by adding specific points (such as individual platform versions or languages) to the timeline.



Finally, we’re bringing you all of the new metrics, dimensions, and timelines in a completely redesigned UI that is faster, more compact, and easier to use. Each dimension is now displayed in dedicated tab, making it easier to click through your stats daily or as often as needed. If you track your stats in another tool, we’re also adding an export capability that lets you download your stats in a single CSV file.

Each and every day, we are humbled by the trajectory of Android and our partners.

With a year-on-year growth rate of more than 250%, 850,000 new Android devices are activated each day, jetting the total number of Android devices around the world past 300 million. These numbers are a testament to the break-neck speed of innovation that defines the Android ecosystem.

Cheaper Nokia Windows Phones

We all know that Nokia is the king of entry level devices, and it seems they're keen on retaining that title as their upcoming press conference at MWC will supposedly reveal several new midrange WP-powered devices, alongside the new Lumia 610 and the worldwide version of the Lumia 900.

  This also comes alongside news that Nokia has become the largest Windows Phone manufacturer, beating out HTC. This is truly an impressive achievement, considering Nokia has only been selling Windows Phone since the start of Q4 2011.

The Nokia/Microsoft partnership would to the casual observer sound like two behemoths dominating a significant piece of the global smartphone market, but in case you're one of the few that need to be reminded, WP and Symbian combined accounted for less than 14% of global smartphone sales in 2011.

The Nokia press conference at MWC is coming up fast, so we expect to find out exactly which devices Nokia plans to unveil very shortly.

7-inch Nexus Google's Tablet

Google could launch its pure-bred Nexus tablet this summer, ponders analyst for DisplaySearch Richard Shim.

The device will reportedly offer a 7″ display of 1280 x 800 resolution and around 1.5 to the 2 million units will be produced initially.

The slate is rumored to cost $199, making it a direct Kindle Fire competitor. The OS of choice should be ICS, but Jelly Bean (5.0) isn’t out of the question as the tablet could see the light of day at the IO developer conference, which is scheduled for late June.

LG Optimus 4X HD Review

Today we will be talking about the new Optimus 4X HD, one of the most exciting phones to come out of LG recently. From the name you can tell that it will be a successor to the Optimus 2X, which it is, and it improves upon the older model in almost every way.

For starters, you have a massive 4.7-inch, 1280 x 800 resolution IPS display. Powering it will be Nvidia's Tegra 3 processor. As you may know, the Tegra 3 has four performance cores, along with a fifth companion core, which takes care of the more menial tasks while consuming very little power. Then there is 1GB of RAM, 16GB internal memory, 8 megapixel rear camera, 1.3 megapixel front camera, MHL, DLNA and a 2,150mAh battery. Despite all of this though the phone will only be 8.9mm thick.

The Optimus 4X HD will come with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, but LG will also be running its custom skin on top, as can be seen from the pictures. Also, the Optimus 4X HD will have dedicated keys below the display, unlike the virtual keys on the Galaxy Nexus.

The Optimus 4X HD will go on sale in Europe in the second quarter of this year. For more information, we will have to wait for MWC.

Collaborate and edit anywhere with the updated Google Docs for Android

As I was sitting on the ferry commuting to Google’s Sydney office this morning, two thoughts occurred to me. First, Australia is beautiful. If you’ve never been here, you really should visit. And second, it’s amazing how productive I can be with just my Android phone and an Internet connection. I was responding to email, reading news articles, and editing documents—just like I do at the office. Only the view was better!

We want to give everyone the chance to be productive no matter where they are, so today we’re releasing a new update to the Google Docs app for Android. We've brought the collaborative experience from Google Docs on the desktop to your Android device. You'll see updates in real time as others type on their computers, tablets and phones, and you can just tap the document to join in.

We also updated the interface to make it easier to work with your documents on the go. For example, you can pinch to zoom and focus on a specific paragraph or see the whole document at a glance. We also added rich text formatting so you can do things like create a quick bullet list, add color to your documents, or just bold something important. Watch the new Google Docs app in action:

Samsung Galaxy Note Review with Photos

Samsung Galaxy Note Review – Samsung have produced many quality smart phones and tablets, but the new Samsung Galaxy Note is something a little bit different so I thought I would write a Samsung Galaxy Note Review. It is what I would best describe as a hybrid version of a smartphone 

It is neither a smartphone nor a tablet and sits right in the middle of these two devices. The Samsung Galaxy Note uses Android technology, feels light to hold, and has a 5.3” screen size. It is worth stressing that it is very light to hold and weighs much less than a standard tablet. On first look the screen is bright and very easy to see.

It is also thin with an 8 Mp camera on the back and a 2 Mp camera on the front which is great for Video Chat. It also comes with its own stylus Which they call an S-Pen.. It probably seems strange that Samsung have introduced the stylus again, but it works well and is accurate to work with. It is perfect for those who like a big screen and with the stylus feature it makes taking notes, writing shopping lists etc a very easy thing to do.

This Samsung Galaxy Note Review represents all the good features that Samsung does very well. The 8 Mega pixel camera takes great pictures and it can also shoot 1080p video, which by any standard for a smartphone is highly impressive.

It also comes with a powerful 1.4 GHz dual-core processor (Now a 1.5 GHz chipset in the  U.S. release) We understand that in the near future Samsung may be releasing the Note with ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich). But with Android 2.3 Gingerbread behind you; it makes the Samsung Galaxy Note ideal for gamers and those of us to like to watch good quality video. I have tested this feature a lot and it is fast and impressive for quality.

HTC One V and XL Info

HTC have reportedly informed Pocketlint.com that HTC will be launching a third HTC One device, named V. The One V will be rocking Rhyme-like specs, namely a single-core 1 GHz processor with 1 gig of RAM, a 5 MP snapper with 720p video capture and Beats Audio branding and possibly goodies in the box. Powering the phone will be Android's latest version - ICS.

The One V is rumored to launch at the MWC in Barcelona this year alongside the One X and the One S. The One X being a quad-core droid and the One S a dual-core one.

There's also a possibility of HTC launching a fourth device, dubbed the One XL, and while there are no details of any kind, we could venture a guess that it could be a device along the lines of the Sensation XL - sporting a massive screen.

While those are some juicy rumors we can't really confirm any of them yet so stay tuned until MWC 2012 kicks off. We'll be there to cover the story as it unfolds.

Swype beta Update for Android 4.0

The perennial beta version of the Swype keyboard for Android has been updated to support the latest version of the operating system. The keyboard, as you may be aware, relies on swipes on the keys to enter words, along with traditional text input where you can just press individual keys. The new beta also offers the ability to install additional languages for tablets and accuracy improvements.

To test out the new beta, I installed it on my phone to see how well it works. Despite being a beta, the application was just as stable as it has ever been, with no real bugs or issues. However, there are some thing about the way the keypad works that still bugs me.

For example, you still can’t double tap on the space key to insert a period, something that almost every other keypad does now. In the SMS view, there is no way to insert a new line into your message (as can be seen above), something that the default Android keypad cannot do either (but SwiftKey can). Also, if you choose to manually enter text instead of swiping, you’ll notice that the space bar is too small, and that the keys on the bottom, such as for voice input cannot be disabled. ICS also has its own drop down list of suggestions for misspelled words, which now overlaps that offered by Swype.

Other than that the keyboard works fine. The good thing about it is that you can use it one-handed. It’s especially convenient on phones with smaller displays, where two-thumb typing can be quite awkward. I’m just wondering why Nuance hasn’t released it on the Market yet.

Motorola Android Ice-Cream Sandwich Update

A couple of months ago Motorola had put up a post on their site talking about the difficulties in getting Ice Cream Sandwich to your phone. Today, they have released a schedule that shows when each of their Android smartphones will receive the coveted ICS upgrade, according to the region.

Starting with the US, we can see that XOOM Family Edition, ATRIX 2 and the ATRIX 4G MB860 will receive the update in the third quarter this year. Others like the DROID series, however, are still in the evaluation and planning stage. Meanwhile, older phones like the DEFY, DROID original, DROID X, etc. will remain on Froyo forever.

In Canada the RAZR will get the update in Q2 but the ATRIX 4G will remain on Gingerbread.

Moving over to the EMEA region, the RAZR and XOOM Wi-Fi will be upgraded in Q2 and the XOOM 2 in Q3. ATRIX update is still being planned whereas the DEFY+ will remain on Gingerbread.

In Asia Pacific, The RAZR and the XOOM will receive the update in Q2 and the ATRIX 2 and XOOM 2 in Q3. The DEFY, DEFY+ and the older phones will not be upgraded.

Lastly, in Latin America and Mexico, RAZR and XOOM will be upgraded in Q2, ATRIX 2 and XOOM 2 in Q3 and the the update for ATRIX and MILESTONE 3 is still being planned. Again, no update for the DEFY.
